Why ECG at Home needed in Pregnancy

Due to some unavoidable reasons (laziness, late night, odd timing, availability issues, ignorance of health, busy schedules, etc.) pregnant lady sometimes ignore her heart which could dangerous sometimes not only for her but also for her baby. For this, Dr. Arry's Mediclinic has been started ECG at Home 5 years back in Delhi & NCR.

  • How does pregnancy affect the heart?

Pregnancy produces stress on your heart and circulatory system. During pregnancy, your blood volume increases by 30 to 50 percent which nourishes your growing baby. During this period your heart pumps more blood each minute and your heart rate increases. During this time, the lady can feel palpitations for which she can do ECG at Home to rule out the abnormal rhythm.

During labor and delivery, you'll have sudden changes in blood flow and pressure. It takes a few weeks after delivery for the stresses on the heart to return to the previous level.

During pregnancy, the cardiac output increases by 30 to 40 percent because of the increase in blood volume.
Blood pressure may decrease by 10 mmHg during pregnancy. This drop can be due to hormone changes and because there is more blood directed toward the uterus.

  • What are the cardiovascular disorders that may develop during pregnancy?

1. Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a rare condition. It is when heart failure develops in the last month of pregnancy or within five months after delivery. After pregnancy, the heart usually returns to its normal size and function. But, some women continue to have poor left ventricular function and symptoms. For this,  ECG at Home and Echocardiography is must to rule out peripartum cardiomyopathy.

2. Hypertension (high blood pressure)

About 6% to 8% of women develop high blood pressure, also called hypertension during pregnancy. This is called pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and is related to preeclampsia, toxemia, or toxemia of pregnancy.

3. Myocardial infarction or Heart attack is, fortunately, a very rare but potentially deadly complication that can occur during pregnancy or during the first few weeks afterward. Patients with coronary artery disease (“hardening of the arteries”) can have a myocardial infarction if the plaque inside their arteries ruptures. Other causes of a heart attack include a spontaneous blood clot inside a coronary vessel (because pregnancy increases the risk of blood clots) and coronary dissection (a weakening of the vessel wall that leads to a spontaneous tear and clotting). So never get delayed and do diagnose if you have chest pain during pregnancy by ECG at Home and consult with a Cardiologist.

4. Arrhythmias i. e. abnormal heartbeats during pregnancy are common. Women who have never had an arrhythmia or heart problem may first develop an arrhythmia during pregnancy. If you have symptoms like palpitations, chest pain, etc. then your doctor may order ECG to determine the type of arrhythmia. Then ECG at Home you can use and send to your cardiologist for further assessment.

  • What are the signs and symptoms of heart diseases during pregnancy?

Difficulty breathing, Shortness of breath with exertion or at rest, Heart palpitations, rapid heart rate or irregular pulse, Chest pain, bloody cough or coughing at night, fatigue (feeling overtired), and light-headedness.

  • What causes an abnormal heart rate during pregnancy?

There are several different potential causes of heart palpitations when you’re pregnant. These include:-
Anxiety or stress, effects of increased blood volume, something you’ve eaten, like food or drinks containing caffeine cold and allergy medicines that contain pseudoephedrine (Nexafed, Sudafed Congestion), an underlying heart disorder, such as pulmonary hypertension or coronary artery disease heart damage from a previous, pregnancy, an underlying medical problem like thyroid disease, anemia, etc.  Routine blood tests and ECG at Home and Echocardiography are investigations of choice to rule out structural heart disease.

  • How to get your heart rate into a normal range while pregnant?

People whose heart rate falls outside their normal range should focus on why this happens.
Most pregnant people need at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week.
Try walking, swimming, and other low-impact options. Yoga or stretching may help support healthy muscles and reduce pregnancy aches and pains.
Eat a healthful diet i. e. proteins, fruits, vegetables, and other nourishing foods can help protect the heart.
Get proper prenatal care and each trimester care is required and ECG at Home and routine blood tests must be included.
Manage anxiety and mental health as anxiety can make the heart beat faster and make pregnancy more difficult.
